Practice: picking the right classifier
What you will be able to do
Count things the way Thai grammar requires, and reach for the safe fallback when you do not know the exact classifier.
Thai cannot count a noun directly. Between the number and the thing sits a classifier, a word saying what KIND of thing is being counted, and the order is noun, number, classifier. Do not try to memorise the whole list. Learn each classifier with its noun, the way you learn gender in French. This drill covers the ones you will meet in a week.
Which classifier counts people?
people
คน (khon) counts people. Using ตัว, the animal classifier, for a person is not a small slip, it is an insult. Sort these two first.

ตัว (dtua) counts animals, and also shirts, tables and chairs.

น้ำสองขวด, náam sǎwng khùuat. The order is noun, number, classifier: water two bottle.

แก้ว (gâeo) is a glass of a drink. A drink can be counted by what it is in: แก้ว in a glass, ขวด in a bottle, ถุง in a bag with ice.

จาน (jaan) is a plate of food. ชาม is a bowl, which is what noodles come in.

หมูปิ้งห้าไม้, mǔu-bpîng hâa máai. ไม้ is the stick itself.

เม็ด (mét) counts tablets, seeds and beads. This is the pharmacy word, and it is the one foreigners most often lack when they need it.

รูป (rûup) counts monks and novices. องค์ is for Buddha images, royalty and sacred objects.

คัน (khan) counts cars, motorbikes, bicycles and umbrellas. ลำ is for boats and aircraft.

คู่ (khûu) counts pairs: shoes, chopsticks, socks.
What should you use?
you do not know the right one
อัน (an) is the accepted fallback for small objects, and pointing plus อันนี้ (an níi), this one, works everywhere. Nobody will misunderstand; they will simply notice, kindly, that you used the general one.
Is that the right order in Thai?
noun, number, classifier
Yes. Two bottles of water is น้ำสองขวด, literally water two bottle. The same pattern handles this and that: noun, classifier, นี้ or นั้น.
Common mistake
The one that genuinely matters is คน for people against ตัว for animals. Everything else is a forgivable slip; that one is not.
