Step 16: Read a receipt and a utility bill
What you will be able to do
Pull the total, the cash tendered and the change off any Thai till receipt in a few seconds and verify the arithmetic on the spot, then find the units used, the amount owed and the due date on an electricity bill, even when the date is written in Thai numerals and a Buddhist Era year.
You meet these two texts more often than any other reading in Thailand. The till slip gets pushed into your hand a dozen times a week, and once a month a folded paper from การไฟฟ้า (MEA in greater Bangkok, PEA everywhere else) is clipped to your gate or slid under the door. สวัสดีครับ, welcome to real text: neither document is prose. Both are grids of labels and numbers printed small in dot-matrix type, and both decide actual money: whether the change is right, whether the bill is yours, and whether you pay before the meter gets cut. Start with the receipt. Legally it is a ใบกำกับภาษีอย่างย่อ, an abbreviated tax invoice, and that formula sits near the top of every legitimate till slip in the country. Above it comes the company header with abbreviations like บมจ. (public company limited), then the item lines, compressed without mercy: product name, size and price fused together, with ล. standing for ลิตร and classifiers like ม้วน doing the work of whole words. Do not parse item lines left to right. Money is right-aligned, so read the right edge first and only decode the Thai on lines whose numbers surprise you. The three-line block near the bottom is the whole game: รวม (total), เงินสด (the cash you handed over), เงินทอน (change back). If เงินสด minus รวม equals เงินทอน, you were charged correctly, and you can verify that in three seconds without reading a single product name. Below it, ภาษีมูลค่าเพิ่ม 7% reports VAT that was already inside the total, because อย่างย่อ receipts always show tax-included prices. Nobody is adding anything on top of you. The electricity bill, ใบแจ้งค่าไฟฟ้า, is built from one pattern: ค่า plus a noun means the charge for that noun. ค่าไฟฟ้า is the energy itself, ค่าบริการ is the fixed service fee, and consumption is counted in หน่วย, the billing word for one kilowatt-hour. The bill stacks the ค่า lines, adds VAT on top, and lands on a bold line containing รวม or ยอด with ชำระ (pay, formal register). That bold figure and the date after กำหนดชำระ are the only two things the bill genuinely wants you to see, so hunt for those anchors instead of reading downward line by line. One warning about numbers before you begin. Receipts print Arabic digits, but state paperwork drifts into Thai numerals ๐ ๑ ๒ ๓ ๔ ๕ ๖ ๗ ๘ ๙ without warning, and every date is Buddhist Era: subtract 543, so พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๙ is 2026. I have trimmed the barcode rows and the meter serial number so the skeleton shows clearly; everything below repeats on every receipt and every bill you will ever hold.

Common mistake
เงินสด is not what you were charged, it is the cash you handed over; what you paid is รวม, and เงินทอน is the proof, so check เงินสด minus รวม every time you pay cash. On app or card slips the tender line changes its name and เงินทอน prints 0.00, so there รวม is the only number that counts. In รวม 2 รายการ the 2 counts items, never money. And the date after กำหนดชำระ hides two traps in one line: Thai numerals and a Buddhist Era year. Read ๑๐ ก.ย. ๒๕๖๙ as 10 September 2569, subtract 543 to get 2026, and do not mistake the meter-reading date printed higher up the bill for the due date at the bottom.
