Practice

Practice: who to wai

What you will be able to do

Decide who you wai, who you answer with a nod, and how high your hands go — the judgement, not the gesture.

Three heights: chest for peers, thumbs to the nose for elders and anyone above you, thumbs between the eyebrows for monks and the Buddha. The junior wais first and the senior returns something smaller. You do not initiate to children or to service staff; a nod and a smile answers them.

  1. How high?

a Thai friend your own age

  2. How high?

your partner's mother, meeting her for the first time

  3. How high?

  4. What do you do?

the 7-Eleven cashier wais you as she hands back your change

  5. Do you wai first?

a neighbour's child, about six, on the stairs

  6. Who wais first?

you are introduced to a man clearly twenty years your senior

  7. What does it look like?

    รับไหว้

  8. What has happened?

you wai a monk and he does not wai back

  9. What do you do?

your partner's father greets you while you are carrying a toddler

  10. Wai again?

you waied your partner's parents on arrival; now you are heading out of the door

  11. Which wai goes with it?

you clip a stranger your own age with your bag on the BTS and say ขอโทษครับ

  12. What is that?

your taxi driver lifts one hand from the wheel as you pass a shrine

  13. How much waiing?

young colleagues in a Bangkok office

  14. What do you do?

you cannot tell whether the man in front of you outranks you

Common mistake

Returning a full wai to service staff, the cashier, the porter, the hostess, whose wai is part of the job. A nod back is never wrong; a deep wai downward almost always is. And when you cannot place someone, do not initiate: nobody minds a missed wai, everybody notices a wrong one.
