Practice: very, too and enough
What you will be able to do
Dial any adjective up, down, past the limit or exactly onto it: nít-nàwy, mâak, loei, goen-bpai and phaw-dii, each in its slot.
Degree words sit around the adjective: นิดหน่อย/มาก/เลย after it, เกินไป for “too”, พอดี/กำลังดี for “just right”, พอ for “enough”, and ค่อนข้าง/ไม่ค่อย before it.
แพงมาก vs แพงไปหน่อย — which starts the discount?
แพงไปหน่อย (phaeng bpai nàwy) — a bit too expensive — is the phrase that actually starts the discount. แพงมาก (phaeng mâak) is just a report on the price, and the vendor can happily agree with it.
ห้องนี้เล็กเกินไป — the feeling is…
The full form เกินไป (goen-bpai) is firm: ห้องนี้เล็กเกินไป — this room is too small. Use it when the answer is already no.
วันนี้ร้อนมากเลย — เลย here…
มาก states the degree, เลย makes it sound felt: ร้อนมากเลย — it is seriously hot today. (After a negative เลย means “at all”; here it intensifies.)
เสื้อตัวนี้ใส่พอดีเลย — พอดี means…
พอดี (phaw-dii) — exactly right: เสื้อตัวนี้ใส่พอดีเลย — this shirt fits me perfectly.

กำลังดี (gam-lang dii) is the cousin of พอดี for spice, sweetness and temperature: เผ็ดกำลังดี — spicy, but exactly right.

The no answer is ใหญ่ไม่พอ (yài mâi phaw) — not big enough. The ไม่ sits on พอ, not on the adjective.
โรงแรมนี้ค่อนข้างแพง — ค่อนข้าง goes…
ค่อนข้าง (khâwn-khâang, rather) goes BEFORE the adjective, like ไม่ค่อย (mâi khâwy): โรงแรมนี้ค่อนข้างแพง — this hotel is rather expensive.
ส้มตำร้านนี้ไม่ค่อยเผ็ด — ไม่ค่อย means…
ไม่ค่อย (mâi khâwy) is the polite middle ground between plain ไม่ and the absolute ไม่…เลย: ส้มตำร้านนี้ไม่ค่อยเผ็ด — the som tam here is not very spicy.

จัง (jang) is pure feeling: อากาศดีจังเลย — the weather is so nice! It never takes a negative and stays out of formal writing.

ที่สุด (thîi-sùt) after the adjective builds the superlative: ถูกที่สุด — the cheapest. This shop is the cheapest in the market.

Common mistake
