Practice: what letters sound like at the end
What you will be able to do
Read the final consonant of any Thai syllable correctly, and tell a live syllable from a dead one, which is the column you need in the tone table.
A Thai consonant rarely keeps its own sound at the end of a syllable. All 44 letters funnel into just eight final sounds, and three of those stop the voice, which is what makes a syllable dead and changes its tone. This is the step that turns a known alphabet into actual reading. Get it wrong and สุข, พูด and รส are unreadable even when you know every letter in them.

สุข
ข makes -k at the end. สุข is sùk, happiness. At the start ข is kh, at the end it is k: that shift is the whole trick.

ด makes -t at the end, never -d. พูด is phûut, to speak. Thai has no voiced stop in final position.

รส
ส makes -t at the end. รส is rót, taste. This catches everyone: ส is s at the front of สอง and t at the back of รส.

ร makes -n at the end. อาหาร is aa-hǎan, food. There is no -r final sound in Thai at all.

ล makes -n at the end. Like ร, it collapses to -n.

จบ is jòp, to finish. It ends in -p, which stops the voice, so the syllable is DEAD. The three stopping finals are -k, -t and -p.

คน is khon, person. It ends in -n, which can be hummed, so the syllable is LIVE. The five live finals are -ng, -n, -m, -y and -w.
Can this letter appear as a FINAL consonant?
ห
No. Six letters never appear as a final: ฉ ผ ฝ ห อ ฮ. If you think you see one there, it is silent or it belongs to the next syllable.
Common mistake
The commonest error is reading the final with its initial sound: ส as s rather than t, ด as d rather than t, ร as r rather than n. Thai has no -r, -l, -s or -ch final at all. If your reading produces one, the letter has changed.
