Practice: requests (chuay, khaw, yaa)
What you will be able to do
Ask someone to do something for you, ask permission to do it yourself, and read a don't at the right level of authority.
Two verbs split the work: ช่วย (chûay) asks the other person to act, ขอ (khǎw) asks permission for you to act. Add ให้ to mark a favour as for you, หน่อย to shrink the asking, and pick อย่า for a friendly don't against ห้าม for a rule.
You hand a stranger your phone and want them to take your photo. Which word asks for that?
ช่วย (chûay) asks the other person to act — their hands are needed. ขอ (khǎw) asks permission for YOU to act, so ขอถ่ายรูปหน่อย makes the stranger pose instead of taking your phone.
ขอถ่ายรูปหน่อยได้ไหม means…
ขอ (khǎw) + verb is permission for yourself, so ขอถ่ายรูป is “may I take a photo”. The same verb with ช่วย…ให้ would be the stranger taking it for you.
In ช่วยเรียกแท็กซี่ให้หน่อย, what does ให้ do?
ให้ (hâi) marks the action as done for you — the beneficiary. ช่วย already implies the favour is for you, but ให้ removes any doubt about who the taxi is for.
Which “don't” goes on a sign, like “no smoking”?
ห้าม (hâam) is the prohibition register — ห้ามสูบบุหรี่ no smoking, ห้ามเข้า no entry. อย่า (yàa) is a friendly don't between people, not a rule.

อย่า (yàa) + นะ (ná) is a friendly reminder between people, not a rule. It is the soft don't; ห้าม is the sign.
In a taxi you want to say “keep the change”. Which sentence?
ไม่ต้องทอน (mâi dtâwng thawn) — no need to give change. ไม่ต้อง releases the other person from acting; it is the taxi essential.
At a counter you want some ice. Which pattern?
ขอ + noun + หน่อย handles most daily transactions: ขอน้ำแข็งหน่อย (khǎw náam-khǎeng nàwy) — some ice please. ช่วย is for asking someone to DO something, not for a thing.

Everyday permission needs no ขอ at all: verb + ได้ไหม. The answer is ได้ (dâi) or ไม่ได้ (mâi dâi).
เก็บเงินด้วยครับ (the bill, please). Which softener is natural here?
ด้วย (dûay), not หน่อย, is the natural softener for the bill — เก็บเงินด้วย (gèp ngoen dûay). You will say this more often than any other sentence on the page.
In ช่วยพูดช้าๆ หน่อย, what does หน่อย do?
หน่อย (nàwy) makes the asking small — it shrinks the request so it reads as a favour, not an order.

Common mistake
Using ขอ (khǎw) when you want the other person to act: ขอถ่ายรูปหน่อย asks permission for YOU to take a photo, so the stranger poses instead of taking your phone. When their hands are needed, it is ช่วยถ่ายรูปให้หน่อย (chûay thàai rûup hâi nàwy).
