ไม่เป็นไร (mâi bpen rai) is probably the phrase you will hear most in Thailand, and the one that says most about how Thai people handle small problems. Literally it is "it is not anything": ไม่ (mâi) not, เป็น (bpen) to be, ไร (rai), a short form of อะไร (à-rai), what. In English it comes out as never mind, it's okay, no problem, don't worry, you're welcome, or no thanks, depending on the moment. You will see it written mai pen rai, and it is said as three even beats with a falling tone on the first.
Mai pen rai meaning: five everyday jobs
After an apology it means never mind, it's fine: you say ขอโทษครับ for bumping someone's arm and they answer ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ. After a thank you it means you're welcome, it was nothing. When someone offers you something you do not want, a bag at the convenience store or a second plate of food, ไม่เป็นไรครับ is a polite no thanks. When a plan falls through or the bus leaves without you, it is the don't worry, it doesn't matter that lets everyone move on. And said to yourself, under your breath, it is how you let go of a small annoyance.
Mai pen rai and Thai culture
The phrase carries a whole attitude. Thai social life puts a high value on keeping a cool heart, ใจเย็น (jai yen), and on not making anyone lose face, and ไม่เป็นไร is the everyday tool for both. Raising your voice over a small mistake makes a scene; saying ไม่เป็นไร and moving on keeps the peace. Face, jai yen and why nobody says no goes further into why this matters.
Variations you will hear
ไม่เป็นไรครับ and ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ are the polite forms. ไม่เป็นไรหรอก (mâi bpen rai ròk) adds reassurance: really, it's nothing. ไม่เป็นไรเลย (mâi bpen rai loei) is not at all, no problem whatsoever. Among friends it is often clipped so fast it sounds like one word.
Mai pen rai or mâi dtâwng
When you are turning down a service, ไม่ต้อง (mâi dtâwng), no need, is the more exact phrase: ไม่ต้องครับ when the cashier offers a receipt, ไม่ต้องทอนครับ (mâi dtâwng thawn khráp), keep the change. ไม่เป็นไร is softer and works for almost any offer; ไม่ต้อง is clearer when you want to be sure you will not be given it.
When mai pen rai does not mean it is fine
A calm ไม่เป็นไร is not always the end of the matter. If you have damaged something, been badly late or caused real trouble, the other person may say it to keep the peace while still expecting you to put it right. Take the phrase as permission to stay calm, not as permission to do nothing: apologise properly, offer to pay or fix it, and let them turn you down.

Common mistake
The commonest mistake is saying ไม่เป็นไร when you are the one at fault. It is the reply to an apology, not the apology itself; from the person who caused the problem it sounds like "whatever, it doesn't matter". Apologise first with ขอโทษครับ or ขอโทษค่ะ and let the other person say ไม่เป็นไร.
